Argentina – Tierra del Fuego

Where is it?

In Tierra del Fuego, “the Uttermost part of the Earth” about 2000 kms south of Buenos Aires.

What is it like?

Starting from Estancia San Jose, west of Rio Grande, the route heads south across grassy Patagonian ‘steppe’ exploring the open valleys of Tierra del Fuego, passing peat bogs, beaver dams, and winding paths through native southern beech forest. As you ride, the haunting call of guanaco, the wild cameloids of the region, is never far away and condors soar over the peaks of snow capped mountains which surround Lake Fagnano, north of Ushuaia. It’s wild, remote and beautiful country, once inhabited by the Ona people, now by occasional shepherds and solitary gauchos who arrive to round up the wild horses.

Who does it suit?

Anyone after an adventure, wanting to get ‘off-grid’ and do something thrilling and different. You’ll need to conjure up your pioneering Patagonian spirit, as there are some long riding days, weather that can be erratic and one night in a simple, remote camp. But the horses, guides and back-up team are exceptional – fun, friendly, professional and determined to show you this exciting, beautiful back-country whilst looking after you in the best Argentine style!

Why we love it

The name ‘Tierra Del Fuego’ carries with it a magical ring of pioneering adventure and whilst heading out by ship might have been appropriate in the past, horses are the best way to explore this enticingly vast, wild and sometimes harsh landscape. Its a chance to change focus, escape the routine and do something exciting – an adventure in the best company and one you’ll well and truely remember.

Itinerary in Brief

Tierra del Fuego, End of the World by Jakotango

Below is an example itinerary. Please ask us for other itineraries.

Day 1

You will be met at Ushuaia airport in the morning and driven about 4 hours to Estancia San Jose where the first night is spent. Lunch, time to relax before meeting the horses and an afternoon ride to get to know them and try the Argentine tack. Return to the estancia for drinks, dinner and the night.

Day 2

Breakfast, and a full day ride to the banks of the Rio Grande where you stop for a picnic lunch. In the afternoon a fast ride back across the steppe to Estancia San Jose. Dinner and night

Day 3

Breakfast and set off south towards Estancia Rio Apen where the night will be spent. This is the longest ride of the week; the exact route is weather dependant and you may spend about 10 hours in the saddle. Stop half way for a picnic lunch carried in saddle bags and a good rest. The afternoon's route is more forested, there are peat bogs to cross and you pass several beaver dams before finally ariving at Rio Apen for a welcome dinner and the night in comfortable converted caravans.

Day 4

A long morning ride along open valleys bordered by forested hills to Estancia El Boqueron, a picturesque yellow house belonging to Ines Menedez Behety, whose family were pioneers of the region. After lunch and a siesta, explore on foot, or ride into the forest to see one of the beaver dams. Dinner and night El Boqueron.

Day 5

Breakfast and a full day ride through forest, around peat bogs and eventually to a clear topped summit with wonderful views of the snow capped peaks. Stop for a picnic, looking out for condors soaring above and below, and for wild horses in the valleys. Return to El Boqueron for a delicious barbecue and the night.

Day 6

Breakfast and ride into the wilderness, following a broad valley towards Puesto La Republica, a remote gaucho hut. The camp is carried by pack horses which stay here with the horseman whilst riders continue climbing into a secluded valley, and upto a high pass with views down to Lake Fagnano and across the mountains above Ushuaia. In the afternoon a quick descent back to the puesto for dinner. Night in camp.

Day 7

Breakfast in camp and ride a different route back to Estancia El Boqueron. Chances for some good canters along the valleys, reaching the estancia in time for lunch. After lunch say goodbye to the horses and set off driving back to Estancia San Jose. Farewell dinner and night at San Jose.

Day 8

Breakfast and transfer about 4 hours to Ushuaia, to arrive early afternoon. We recommend an extra night in the worlds' southernmost city. Own arrangements for onward travel.
