In Tierra del Fuego, “the Uttermost part of the Earth” about 2000 kms south of Buenos Aires.
Starting from Estancia San Jose, west of Rio Grande, the route heads south across grassy Patagonian ‘steppe’ exploring the open valleys of Tierra del Fuego, passing peat bogs, beaver dams, and winding paths through native southern beech forest. As you ride, the haunting call of guanaco, the wild cameloids of the region, is never far away and condors soar over the peaks of snow capped mountains which surround Lake Fagnano, north of Ushuaia. It’s wild, remote and beautiful country, once inhabited by the Ona people, now by occasional shepherds and solitary gauchos who arrive to round up the wild horses.
Anyone after an adventure, wanting to get ‘off-grid’ and do something thrilling and different. You’ll need to conjure up your pioneering Patagonian spirit, as there are some long riding days, weather that can be erratic and one night in a simple, remote camp. But the horses, guides and back-up team are exceptional – fun, friendly, professional and determined to show you this exciting, beautiful back-country whilst looking after you in the best Argentine style!
The name ‘Tierra Del Fuego’ carries with it a magical ring of pioneering adventure and whilst heading out by ship might have been appropriate in the past, horses are the best way to explore this enticingly vast, wild and sometimes harsh landscape. Its a chance to change focus, escape the routine and do something exciting – an adventure in the best company and one you’ll well and truely remember.
