In Shell, about an hour’s drive from the rodeo town of Cody and two hours east of Yellowstone National Park.
Privately owned and owner managed, it is a very comfortable guest ranch run to high standards with an excellent riding programme, around 90 horses and access to 650,000 acres of varied landscapes. The ranch area itself is quite small, its not far off a tar road, set in a valley surrounded by pasture used for grazing and landscaped grounds – but the small road past the ranch winds on up the mountain taking you to a spectacular mix of arizona-like desert, lush flower-filled pastures and craggy rocks all of which you can explore on a horse. The view to the back is of dramatic, red hills, ‘hole in the wall’ cowboy country of the mid-west.
With a guest oriented ethos, the ranch is a great choice for anyone who wants a comfortable ranch stay with lots of good riding and varied scenery to explore. Most weeks include an afternoon of optional cattle work, an introduction to moving cattle, there’s a swimming pool for your downtime as well as fly fishing tuition, afternoons to practice archery or trap-shooting and you can add a visit to the rodeo in Cody. Evenings are relaxed but social, a chance to ‘wash and brush up’, enjoy whatever cocktail you wish, then a leisurely 3 course dinner, looking at the mountain view and feeling just a little bit spoilt.
Good riding, good horses, the glorious big-sky scenery and who doesn’t love to ride western for a change? There’s also enough activity, enough relaxation, great food and a genuinely welcoming ‘can do’ ethos. It feels like a proper holiday
