Kenya: Sosian Lodge

Comfortable safari lodge, flexible stay, available year round (except May). Suitable for riders and non-riders, families, couples and mixed groups.

Where is it?

On central Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau, an area bordered by the Great Rift Valley to the west, the Aberdares to the south and Mount Kenya to the southeast.

What is it like?

Over the last 25 years, the focus at Sosian – like many of the privately owned conservancies on the Laikipia Plateau – has been to restore land once intensively used for cattle back to wildlife. The landscape is made up of rolling acacia covered hills and rocky valleys that drop down to the fast flowing Ewaso Nyiro River. The acacia woodland attracts large numbers of beautiful reticulated giraffe, you might see Grevy’s zebra and the area is rarely without a pack of wild dog. Laikipia is home to over 6,000 resident elephant, Kenya’s second-largest population, which migrate across the plateau between Mount Kenya and Samburu. It also supports numerous cats, buffalo, many species of antelope, as well as hippo, crocodile, and much more. Sosian Lodge sits within 24,000 acres of private land that links seamlessly with neighboring conservancies. Once the homestead of the farm manager, it has been transformed into a stylish base with seven comfortable bedrooms, a stable of more than 30 horses, a gorgeous pool, and an atmosphere that is generous, fun, and supremely welcoming.

Who does it suit?

Couples, families, groups with mixed interests, anyone wanting to ride. Its comfortable and stylish, very welcoming and relaxed and all safaris are personalised. There’s a choice of game viewing by horse, by vehicle and on foot, of mountain bikes, swimming, camel safaris, fly camping, fishing, tubing, tennis, picnics, BBQs, relaxation. Add a few days on the Kenyan coast and you have the ingredients for one of the best holidays imaginable!

Why we love it

Imagine staying with friends, but with the service of a great hotel. The atmosphere is completely relaxed, with plenty to do if you feel like it. Horses, camels, a 4×4 – who wants to ride? Let’s have a picnic, tube down the river, jump off a waterfall, or enjoy a lazy lunch by the pool. Maybe go fishing. Maybe have a snooze. Who wants to track a leopard? Chill or thrill? There’s great riding of course, but also good fun, good food, and good company—the best family fun ever!
