Safaris explore both the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana and the Makgadigadi Saltpans, a huge area of nearly 4000 sq kilometres, surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, further south.
The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s foremost game areas boasting huge numbers and species of game which moves around seasonally, depending on flood levels. The terrain is a mix of flat, grassy plains with raised ‘islands’ of palm trees, thick mopane forest and a network of streams and water channels that branch out from the main Okavango River. Seasonal floodwaters create watermeadows and huge, clear lakes.
The salt pans, further south, are a vast swathe of white sand bordered by swaying desert palms. Between January and April, summer rain brings an influx of wildlife as water filling the desert pans attracts southern Africa’s largest migration of zebra, wildebeest and thousands of pink flamingos. Later in the year, when the water has gone, the moon-like emptiness of the salt flats is other-worldly. For riders, one delight is the going – mile upon mile of firm sand – but the thing that really strikes when you ride here is the incredible feeling of space and solitude.
The Kalahari base is usually Camp Kalahari, a comfortable oasis hidden amongst the palms, with shady thatch covered tents, excellent service and a pool for hot days. In the Delta, the base is the lovely Cha Cha Metsi camp.
These safaris are for intermediate riders and above who want to see two very different sides of Botswana. We hear a lot about the wetland delta; the Kalahari is Botswana’s charismatic other half and the contrast is immense.
A wonderful way to experience Botswana’s contrasting environments. The Delta’s beautiful, pristine wilderness with all its game and incredible birdlife is hard to beat but the ‘out there’ experience you get exploring the harsh, remote Magadikgadi saltpans always leaves a huge impression. We love the combination of very comfortable camps, the chance to ride in two hugely contrasting areas, and of course the opportunity to ‘see it all’!
