Botswana: Horizon Horseback Mashatu

7 night semi-mobile safaris in eastern Botswana, riding between 3 different safari camps on the Mashatu Reserve, available year round. Suitable for confident, intermediate riders and above.

Where is it?

On Mashatu Game Reserve, part of the Tuli block which is in eastern Botswana and borders South Africa and the Limpopo River.

What is it like?

Mashatu is a huge private game reserve, which is part of the Tuli block, a ‘big game’ area, known as the ‘Land of Giants’ for its large population of elephant as well as eland, lion, ostrich, enormous Kori Bustard and massive Baobab trees. Its varied terrain ranges from belts of thick thorn scrub and tall mashatu and fever trees lining the Limpopo River, to vast dusty plains, rocky ‘kopjes’ and sandstone outcrops. It has quite a feeling of history too, with evidence of pioneering explorers such as Cecil Rhodes of the Anglo Boer war, and traces of ancient settlements dating back 1500 years. Nights on safari are in 3 camp locations, all different in style – a traditional tented safari camp, a ‘tree house’ style camp raised on stilts amongst the trees and an ancient ‘kgotla’ enclosure where, protected from game, you sleep in cozy camping pods.

Who does it suit?

Tuli Safaris are for strong intermediate riders and above, who are confident to ride in an unfenced area with ‘big’ (and potentially dangerous) game. They follow a route through the Mashatu Reserve, with nights in 3 different camps, all comfortable but also with an adventurous feel.

Another way to explore this area is on an African Explorer Safari which combines a few nights at a camp in South Africa with a few nights on Mashatu. This is our top choice for a ‘first’ camping safari or for anyone needing to build confidence (for further information see Southern Africa – African Explorer Safari with Horizon Horseback). Strong child riders of 12yrs or over are accepted.

On certain dates, non-riding partners can cycle at Horizon Mashatu rather than ride a horse. Cycle Mashatu safaris use the same camps and run alongside horse safaris, but with game viewing by mountain bike not a horse. Ask us for more details. Unfortunately Reserve restrictions mean no accompanying non-riders unless joining a set cycling programme.

Why we love it

These safaris tick many boxes on a horse safari wishlist! Quality horses, the thrill of riding with ‘big’ game, the variety and feeling of adventure using 3 different camps, which are comfortable but also give an exciting and authentic bush experience – a true escape from the everyday. Hospitality is generous and Mashatu is relatively little visited so you feel you are exploring somewhere offtrack. Safaris are great value too!

Itinerary in Brief

7 night Tuli Safari

Below is an example itinerary. Please ask us for other itineraries.

Day 1

You will be meet at the Limpopo Valley Airstrip (or South African border post of Pont Drift) and driven the short way to the stables. Lunch, a short introduction to the horses and a late afternoon ride to Two Mashatus Camp. Dinner and overnight Two Mashatus.

Day 2

Set off early riding north-west towards Tree Camp, built in a lovely spot next to the Mjala river where you live on a raised platform amongst the trees. A late lunch on arrival and after a siesta a guided bush walk in the afternoon. Dinner and night in Tree Camp.

Day 3

A long morning ride, exploring this area where the two rivers, the Limpopo and the Motloutse, meet. Arrive at your new camp, which is set up in an old tribal meeting court, the Kgotla, in time for a late lunch. An afternoon game drive and sundowners, returning to Kogtla Camp for dinner under the stars and the night in cozy camping pods.

Day 4

Head out early, riding west to an area of golden sandstone rock formations. Return to Kgotla for lunch and a siesta, then in the late afternoon you might drive to a sundowner spot in the Mmamagwa Hills. Dinner and second night at Kgotla.

Day 5

Early wake up when game is most active and set off riding to explore. A long morning ride takes you back by a new route to Tree Camp, where a late lunch is waiting. A siesta and in the late afternoon a guided bush walk or an optional game drive (extra charge) with guides from Mashatu Main Camp to look for lion, leopard and cheetah, a fantastic opportunity to see these big cats at close quarters, returning with a spotlight to look out for other nocturnal game. Dinner and overnight Tree Camp.

Day 6

Today's route meanders through beautiful plains between the Mojadi and Majele rivers, with views into the Limpopo River Valley. After a long morning you'll return to base camp, Two Mashatus, for lunch by the pool. Enjoy an afternoon walk to a nearby kopje for sundowners. Dinner and night Two Mashatus.

Day 7

Set out on a final long morning ride to explore the Pitsane river valley, where regular water holes often draw thirsty herds of game. The open plains are perfect for an exhilarating canter, perhaps with wildebeest or zebra if you are lucky! Back to Two Mashatus for lunch and in the afternoon a walk or short evening ride to the banks of the Limpopo. Final dinner and night Two Mashatus.

Day 8

An early morning ride and after about 2 hours arrive at the stables. Farewell to the horses, time to shower and after brunch at the stables transfer to Mashatu airstrip for a charter back to Johannesburg (or Pont Drift border post) for your onward journey.
