Spain – Mountains & Valleys of Gredos

4, 6 and 7 night village-to-village rides, exploring the river valleys and moorland of the Sierra de Gredos in central Spain. Available March to November for intermediate riders and above.

Where is it?

In Castile, central Spain, starting about three hours drive west of Madrid, past the medieval walled city of Avila, on the borders of the provinces of Caceras, Salamanca and Avila.

What is it like?

The Gredos Mountains are a lovely example of rural, unspoilt Spain. High snow-capped peaks frame open moorland valleys and in summer the hillsides are covered in seas of yellow broom, lavender and thyme. Routes explore the untouristed valleys of the Tormes, Corneja, Alberche and Tietar rivers, passing through sleepy hillside villages and stopping at village hotels at night.

Who does it suit?

These are excellent quality rides, with a real emphasis on personal service. Riding days are broken up with stops for delicious leisurely lunches served at a table set up on the grassy river bank. Nights are at comfortable village and country hotels, including a Parador. The horses are well-loved, well-cared for and well-schooled. Riding hours are long enough for you to feel you’ve really done something but not too long that enjoyment suffers and the pace is fun and well-balanced to keep everyone interested. It’s also not just riding – you’ll come away feeling you know and understand a little more about Spain and Spanish culture and ready to sign up next year!

Why we love it

Superbly organised, without any feeling of being regimented. You can hand over responsibility for your enjoyment and relax knowing the team will make the right choices every time. Good horses, warm Spanish hospitality and hosts with an eye for every detail, who’re keen to ensure everyone has a great time.  It’s also a surprisingly beautiful area to explore.
