Kenya: Offbeat Safaris

7 and 8 night adventurous mobile safaris, using private tented camps, available December to March and June to October. Suitable for confident intermediate riders and above. Non-riders welcome.

Where is it?

Most safaris are in south west Kenya, following a linear route along the northern edge of the Masai Mara game reserve. Safaris may also be organised on the Laikipia Plateau, about 4 hours north of Nairobi.

What is it like?

The Mara landscape is predominantly open, rolling grassland plains, with patches of thick bush and woodland. There are rocky hillsides, where the escarpment drops into the Rift valley and the Mara River winds its way through the bush en route to Lake Victoria in the west.  There are no fences, just wonderful views over distant hills to the horizon far beyond and there is game everywhere …..zebra, giraffe, huge numbers of antelope, elephant, buffalo, monkeys, baboons, hippo, lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena and herds of wildebeest in numbers that swell to the millions when the annual migration arrives. In Laikipia, safaris cross untouristed private land that was once part of some of Kenya’s biggest family-owned ranches. Highlights include views of Mount Kenya, a chance to see large numbers of elephant, perhaps wild dog, black rhino and some of the rare, unusual game species, such as Reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, that are thriving in Laikipia in rising numbers.

Who does it suit?

Experienced, confident riders who love an adventure. You need to be confident to ride from camp-to-camp across country, over varied terrain where there is ‘big’ (and potentially dangerous) game and where you can meet the unexpected at any turn. You should be riding fit as the open going cries out for long, exhilarating canters and the pace is often fast. Camps are comfortable and service in them exemplary, but safari authenticity rather than unecessary modern amenities, is the camp byword.

Why we love it

One of the original riding safari operators in Africa, Offbeat Safaris—founded by the late Tristan Voorspuy—has earned a reputation as THE company to safari with, and it remains one of our absolute favourites. An Offbeat riding safari is everything a special holiday should be: an exciting, professionally run, highly personalised adventure that leaves you on a high and wanting more. Much of the magic comes from Offbeat’s wonderful horses, the area’s abundant game and superb riding country—but there’s something deeper, too. The whole experience feels generous, with a genuine desire to make every moment the best it can be. For us, nothing beats riding from camp to camp, ending the day around the fire—tired, exhilarated, drink in hand—before a relaxing dinner and comfortable night in a secluded camp. A perfect ending to a perfect day.

Itinerary in Brief

Below is an example itinerary. Please ask us for other itineraries.

Day 1

Met at Nairobi International airport or your Nairobi hotel and driven to Wilson domestic airport for a flight of about an hour to the Mara. Met on arrival at the Mara airstrip, a game drive of around 40 minutes to the first night's camp set up at Olare Lamun. Lunch in camp, settle in and after tea, meet the horses and short afternoon ride to try them. Dinner and night in camp.

Day 2

Set off on an early morning ride to explore this remote area. Ride back to camp for a cooked breakfast and then perhaps a walk up a nearby hill to stretch legs and admire the far reaching views. Lunch in camp and after tea, a ride or game drive to a Masai village. Dinner and overnight Olare Lamun camp.

Day 3

The first moving day today covering nearly 35 miles. Set off riding towards the Mara Game Reserve, stopping for a break after a couple of hours and then a long lunch break when vehicles met you. In the afternoon ride on arriving at the new Olare Oruk camp on the edge of the Mara Reserve at tea time. Dinner and night in the new camp.

Day 4

A full day at the Olare Oruk camp, riding out to explore and with game drives for close up viewing of elephant, lion and other cats. There may also be a chance for a guided walk and an evening drive with a spot light to look out for nocturnal game on the prowl. Dinner and night Olare Oruk.

Day 5

Another moving day today, take you upstream along the Olare Oruk River and west across plains towards the Mara River on the park boundary. Unless the river is in complete flood, horses will ford it at one of the famous wildebeest crossings before meeting vehicles for the lunch break. In the afternoon ride up the Soit Olololol Escarpment to a new camp set up on a forest glade with wonderful views. Dinner and night Soit Olololol camp.

Day 6

After breakfast ride down the escarpment and ford the river again, riding on to meet the vehicles for lunch on the far bank. In the late afternoon ride on to the new and final camp on the bank of the river, where dinner is accompanied by the grunting of hippo in neighbouring pools. Dinner and night Mara River camp

Day 7

Perhaps an early morning ride, crossing the river again to explore and track game on the other side. Ride back to camp for breakfast before setting off on a game drive to see the northern part of the Mara. Lunch in camp and in the late afternoon, a final evening ride out or last evening game drive. Dinner and last night on safari at Mara River camp.

Day 8

An early morning ride followed by breakfast, then transfer to the airstrip for a flight back to Nairobi Wilson, usually departing Mara about 11.00 and arriving Wilson 12 noon. You will be driven to a hotel close to JK International airport where a day room will be booked or the the ariport for onward travel.
