Botswana: Delta & Desert – Ride Botswana

8 night safaris which combine 5 nights in the Okavango Delta with 3 nights in the Kalahari Desert, using private safari camps, available year round. Suitable for intermediate riders and above.

Where is it?

Safaris explore both the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana and the Makgadigadi Saltpans, a huge area of nearly 4000 sq kilometres, surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, further south.

What is it like?

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s foremost game areas boasting huge numbers and species of game which moves around seasonally, depending on flood levels. The terrain is a mix of flat, grassy plains with raised ‘islands’ of palm trees, thick mopane forest and a network of streams and water channels that branch out from the main Okavango River. Seasonal floodwaters create watermeadows and huge, clear lakes.

The salt pans, further south, are a vast swathe of white sand bordered by swaying desert palms. Between January and April, summer rain brings an influx of wildlife as water filling the desert pans attracts southern Africa’s largest migration of zebra, wildebeest and thousands of pink flamingos.  Later in the year, when the water has gone, the moon-like emptiness of the salt flats is other-worldly. For riders, one delight is the going – mile upon mile of firm sand – but the thing that really strikes when you ride here is the incredible feeling of space and solitude.

The Kalahari base is usually Camp Kalahari, a comfortable oasis hidden amongst the palms, with shady thatch covered tents, excellent service and a pool for hot days. In the Delta, the base is the lovely Cha Cha Metsi camp.

Who does it suit?

These safaris are for intermediate riders and above who want to see two very different sides of Botswana. We hear a lot about the wetland delta; the Kalahari is Botswana’s charismatic other half and the contrast is immense.

Why we love it

A wonderful way to experience Botswana’s contrasting environments. The Delta’s beautiful, pristine wilderness with all its game and incredible birdlife is hard to beat but the ‘out there’ experience you get exploring the harsh, remote Magadikgadi saltpans always leaves a huge impression. We love the combination of very comfortable camps, the chance to ride in two hugely contrasting areas, and of course the opportunity to ‘see it all’!

Itinerary in Brief

Delta & Desert Safari (8 nights)

Below is an example itinerary. Please ask us for other itineraries.

Day 1

Met at Maun Airport and either set off by vehicle for a drive of about 2 hours or meet the helicopter that will fly you 20 minutes or so to Cha Cha Metsi camp. Shown to your tents on arrival and after a cup of tea, there may be time to meet the horses and for a first ride out. If you drive to camp, you may be too late to ride but can relax in the camp, enjoying late afternoon Delta views. Hot showers and sundowners before dinner and the night in camp.

Days 2-5

Four full days to explore the Delta. The daily timetable varies a little with weather, water levels, movement of game and guest wishes - but typically days start with an early wake-up call and light breakfast at day break. Then mount up for a morning ride, heading away from the camp across open floodplain to track wildlife and enjoy the Delta’s prolific bird life. After riding for about 3 hours, return to camp for a leisurely lunch and siesta. Then, after tea at about 4pm, a gentle late afternoon ride to explore a new route, or swap horses for mokoro canoes or head out with a guide on foot or in a game drive vehicle, to get a different perspective on the bush. Back to camp at sunset for hot showers, drinks and dinner. Nights Cha Cha Metsi.

Day 6

An early breakfast and last ride out if you wish before a 20 minute helicopter trip back to Maun to meet the light aircraft that will fly you south to Camp Kalahari (about 45 minutes flight). If you prefer vehicle transfers are also possible. Settle in at Camp Kalahari, a late lunch or tea before meeting the horses for a short introductory ride. If you arrive by vehicle there may not be time to ride but you can head out by vehicle for a sundowner as the sun goes down behind the palms. Return to camp for hot showers, drinks, dinner and night.

Day 7

Woken with tea or coffee and a light breakfast, before an early morning ride, perhaps stopping close to a colony of meerkats, some of the Kalahari’s most fascinating inhabitants. Tethering the horses you can walk into the middle of the group - if its chilly you might find a meerkat snuggling up to you for warmth or perhaps using your head as a sentry lookout post… Ride back to Camp Kalahari for lunch and a siesta, then after tea, a game drive to search for unique desert species returning to camp with a spot light to look for nocturnal game. Dinner and night Camp Kalahari.

Day 8

Up with the dawn and a light breakfast before a long morning ride through the ‘land of a thousand islands’, a chain of palm-covered sand dunes on the ancient lake-bed. The white encrusted pans between the islands provide fantastic going for horses and for fun, exhilarating riding. Lunch back in camp, a siesta or swim, before a late afternoon ride or game drive. Dinner and night in camp.

Day 9

A final morning ride perhaps to a traditionally built Bushman village, with a chance to walk into the bush with members of the Zu/’hoasi Bushman community, always a fascinating experience. Ride back to camp for brunch, before your transfer back to Maun by light aircraft (45 mins) or vehicle (3 hours) and your onward travel from Maun.
